3-way valves are usually used as mixing valves, where the required temperature is achieved by mixing the right proportion of hot water from the boiler with cool water from the return. 3-way valves can also be used as diverter or diverter valves when it is necessary to separate the water stream from the boiler into two circuits, e.g. for the heating system and the hot water tank.
