The calibrator is used to decalibrate the pipe end before inserting it into the fitting.
The end of the pipe after cutting is not even and often flattened - inserting such a pipe into the fitting - is often the reason for leaks.
The calibrator has metal knives that chamfer the edge of the pipe.
